Why You’re Feeling Overwhelmed In Your Business (And What To Do About It)

Business is hard, right. And a lot of the time, especially if we’re running as a one-man or one-woman band.
We can start to feel really overwhelmed with all the moving pieces that we need to do
Quite often people start out in business because they’ve had a lot of experience in that particular industry that they want to start out on their own. They want to create their own Empire. But what a lot of people often don’t realise or see is that they actually need to have some structure in place. Because they’ve got, not just their industry-specific tasks or client work that they’re going to be doing. They have their entire business around.
So they need to keep on top of their marketing their sales, their lead generation, their finances their admin and everything else that comes with running a business
So it suddenly is something suddenly completely understandable but at some point, we become overwhelmed. We have so much going on that we have been running on empty, we don’t really know where to turn.
What I want to talk about today is, why you’re feeling overwhelmed in your business. And then some ways that you can change that.
Often being overwhelmed in business is created because as I’ve touched upon. There’s so much to do.
There’s so much to keep on top of. A lot of unbillable work that people often don’t realise when it starts now. And that becomes a real burden. But if you neglect those pieces which are often the operations of business. If you neglect that it means that you then don’t have a business to run.
So you can be fantastic in your industry and what you do
If you’re not keeping on top of the operations, you’re not going to be generating the leads and you’re not going to be marketing and raising awareness of your brand. So often the overwhelm comes from being pulled in all directions. You’re being pulled to be the finance director you’re being pulled to be the admin, you’re being pulled to be the marketing director you’re being pulled to be the accountant you’re being pulled to be everything else to everyone.
And it just becomes exhausting
There is a way that you can turn that around. You can create systems if you don’t have systems in place. I really really recommend you put those in place, because by creating a system. It takes a lot of the overwhelm away, and a lot of the pressure because you have everything that’s documented you’re not constantly having to think about what you should be doing at any one time.
You effectively have something that’s telling you what you need to be doing at that time. So by having a system in place, you are then having strategies and processes. This means that you’re not going to be spending time on things that you don’t really need to be spending time on and, you can start to really streamline, what’s going on in your business, and then automate it.
A lot of the time people say, Oh if you’re feeling overwhelmed and a bit lost you need to hire some support
But then it becomes another situation where you’re feeling quite torn about that decision because you maybe don’t have the finance in place to do that. Or you just don’t feel comfortable doing that and that’s not really the route that you want to go down. Both of those are completely understandable and real reasons for not hiring your support now.
If you create the systems. You have a real route that you can go down to create a really successful business and really good money, but without being overwhelmed and feeling exhausted and drained. So, I would really really recommend you put those systems in place. Once you have the systems and you have the strategies and processes there. It means that you can really whittle down what’s going on. And you can be tracking your metrics so you can see what return is coming back. If there’s no return. Then stop doing it. It’s a waste of your time.
You really need to get specific with what you’re doing. And having systems means that you’re able to do that
Now a lot of people will say, I haven’t got the time to create a system and creating a system can be something purely as simple as video in your screen when you’re carrying out a particular process. You don’t need to document the systems. To start off with, you can just video your screen.
The systems aren’t really the time-consuming bit, because it’s the processes that can be time-consuming to create. So what I would really recommend you do is to write down your core pillars of systems that you’re going to have.
Generally, these will be your marketing system, sales system, your finance system and admin system
Those are generally the four pillars that you will start off with, and what you then need to do is sit down and think, okay, in your marketing system, what strategy, are you doing, what strategy Are you utilising to really gain awareness of your brand. Then in your finance system do the same again.
What strategies are you using to keep your finances in check how you check in to make sure that you’re not paying for something you’re not using. And then also do the same in your cell system and your admin system. Once you have those strategies set out.
I would also really recommend that you think about what your objective is with that strategy. So for instance, if you have your marketing system. What is the objective if you were using email marketing. Is your objective to build up an email list in order to launch a new offering. If so, what is our offering? And what are you going to create, to build up your audience in your email list? In order to successfully launch that new offering to them.
Making sure that you’re starting essentially from the end and working backwards, makes a real difference
And then set up a way to check your return from those strategies. Once you have those in place and that shouldn’t really take that long. Don’t forget your strategies are going to change. So don’t spend too much time worrying about whether or not it’s the right strategy to do marketing and running a business it’s all about working things out it’s all about trial and error.
Because what one audience wants another audience may not
Making sure that you’re really putting out your stretches of what you want to do, but not dwelling on it too much. And then set yourself a 90-day mark where you’re going to go back and review those strategies. In regards to the processes for those strategies, as I say, you don’t need to have something that’s documented in concrete, you can just video your screen, so then you can refresh your mind when you’re going start doing that process again.
It is good to have them documented so I would recommend that as you’re carrying out a process and recording your screen that you also maybe talk, as you’re doing it because that means you can get a transcript, and then make that a documented process. But that’s a bit further down the line. During the video to start off with as you’re talking through it is perfectly fine for now.
I hope you found it helpful about being overwhelmed in business. And as always, if you have started to implement your systems, or you’re not really too sure you have some questions then get in touch. We’re happy to help.
