Are Systems The Same As Tools Or Software?

Hello, welcome to another episode of what would Charlotte do. Today, I’m answering a is probably not so much a question. But it’s something that I see a lot of online. That is our systems, the same as tools or software.
Online I find, there’s a lot of confusion around what systems, actually is.
In short, the answer to this is no systems are not the same as tools or software. Ultimately, systems are a group of processes that when group together, provide a specific outcome. Eg the system. So, tools are the things that help you achieve that outcome. I always like to use an example, because I always think that makes things a lot easier to understand. For this example, I’m going to use.
We want to make cake.
And that’s the desired outcome. So, the outcome is the system that we want to bake a cake. The recipe is the process, and the ingredients and the utensils are the tools that we’re going to use to make that happen. So, you see in order to make the perfect cake, you need the right ingredients and utensils. Because without them, you cannot make the cake, you can’t stir the mix if you don’t have a mixing bowl!
And the recipe tells us what we need to do with those ingredients and utensils that we’re going to be using.
The majority of the time, a system will consist of multiple tools and multiple subsystems and processes. Because the actual system itself is going to be the overall objective. If we’re looking at this from a business point of view. We would be looking at, for example, your marketing system. Within your marketing system, you will have multiple subsystems that you’re going to use in order to achieve your marketing goals and objectives. You would have, for an example.
And within your subsystems, you will have your process, which will be the steps that you need to take in order to achieve that subsystem.
Then that subsystem then leads in to the overall system and the objective that that has in the overall marketing system. Again, for an example. So, if we are sticking with the marketing system, you have the overall objective as being your marketing system. So what is the objective here? Is it to get more leads coming in, for instance, build more awareness. So, depending on what that objective is then if you had your email marketing subsystem. What’s the objective, what does that do to help you achieve the overall objective of your marketing system.
What does social media marketing do so you could have the social media market marketing is there to build awareness of your brand.
And then your email marketing could be that thing that’s going to actually ask for the sound or build your authority, build your trust with your audience. Then you could have your content marketing, what’s that going to do, is that going to build up your authority, or is that going to be trying to lead sales through the door.
Each subsystem will have its own objective that will then come together to achieve the overall marketing system. I hope you found that helpful and I hope that’s given some clarity around the confusion that we find so so much around systems and tools, and where they actually work together.
As always if you do have any questions that you would like me to answer, then do pop me a message, and I will do my best to answer that for you.
